Newcastle Have Held ‘Talks’ About Signing Swedish Ace But Face Competition From Chelsea And 6 Other PL Clubs

Newcastle have been in “talks with intermediaries” about purchasing FC Copenhagen winger Roony Bardghji, according to 90min.com.

The website claims that the Magpies could be involved in a fierce battle for the Swedish Under 21 international’s signature, with Copenhagen “ready to sell” the player during the January transfer window.

Chelsea are said to be leading seven other Premier League teams who could rival Newcastle, with the likes of Manchester United, Tottenham, Brighton, Fulham, Brentford and Aston Villa in the mix too.

There are also reportedly numerous other clubs on the continent keen on signing Bardghji if the teenager does become available next month.

Why are Copenhagen looking to sell Bardghji?

The 18-year-old’s contract with the Danish club is set to expire at the end of next season and it appears as if there is no prospect of the player signing an extension.

With Bardghji’s value only likely to drop between now and next summer, the decision has seemingly been made to sell him to the highest bidder in January.

Newcastle may pursue other targets

Although sporting director Dan Ashworth and his recruitment team will undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on Bardghji, recruiting a right winger is not expected to be a priority for the Magpies next month.

Manager Eddie Howe could do with strengthening his options out wide at some point, but there is a more urgent need in other areas. Replacing the suspended Sandro Tonali in midfield is at the top of the list, while the club may also consider whether to snap up a centre-back and, potentially another striker, due to the number of injuries they have suffered in those two positions.

Newcastle could be hoping that Bardghji stays at Copenhagen for another six months so they can make a move for him at the end of the season instead.
