Newcastle and Manchester United are the two clubs that are “seriously interested” in recruiting Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy, according to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg.
The journalist posted on X yesterday to clarify the Guinean international’s future. There were suggestions that Borussia Dortmund could make a move for the player but those claims have been shot down.
If Guirassy does leave Stuttgart during the January transfer window, it will be to a team where he will be considered first-choice or, at the very least, given starting opportunities on a regular basis.
Guirassy has been in outstanding form this campaign, having scored 18 goals in just 14 appearances. It’s hardly surprising that so many teams have taken an interest in the forward, especially when you take into account his low price tag.
There is a release clause in Guirassy’s contract
It has been widely reported that the 27-year-old can be signed for a bargain price due to a buyout clause. Plettenberg reports that it is “less than” €20m (£17m).
For a team like Newcastle, who are operating on a restricted budget due to Financial Fair Play rules, pursuing a player like Guirassy makes a lot of sense.
Newcastle have struggled to keep strikers fit
While many fans will assume that a replacement for the suspended Sandro Tonali would be the top priority for the January transfer window, it appears that the Magpies will also be targeting a new No.9.
That is not a complete surprise considering the fitness records of Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak. Both strikers have spent spells on the sidelines this season, forcing manager Eddie Howe into starting Anthony Gordon up front on some occasions.
Guirassy’s arrival would certainly give the Newcastle boss better cover and considerably more firepower based on his exploits for Stuttgart.
