Why Have Newcastle United Slumped In Form Ahead Of Facing Man Utd At Wembley?

So far, 2022/23 has been the best season for Newcastle United in decades. They’re in a strong position to win a place in Europe next season and they have only lost twice all campaign in the league – however, they are having a slump in form.

Newcastle have not won in the Premier League since January 15, when they narrowly beat Fulham 1-0 thanks to a last-ditch effort from Alexander Isak. They have played 4 league games since then, drawing three and losing one.

Their most recent game, when they were beaten 2-0 by Liverpool, was perhaps the most concerning result. The Reds were able to get in behind Newcastle’s back line for both of their goals, catching the Toon out on each occasion.

The game was virtually over when Nick Pope inadvertently handled the ball outside of his area, drawing a red card. The Magpies did have their chances, but all were parried away by Alisson.

Newcastle can take solace in this. While they will be disappointed with the way the game panned out, they were still able to create good chances and they were able to prevent Jurgen Klopp’s team from turning it into a rout.

Goalscoring has been something of an issue for Newcastle recently. As mentioned, they can create chances, but putting them away is another story.

Perhaps the main reason for Newcastle’s dip in form is the absence of midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, who is serving a suspension after he was sent off against Southampton.

The Brazilian has been sensational this season – with limitless energy and crisp passing, he has been the beating heart of the Magpies’ midfield. Without him, they can find it difficult to establish a rhythm or tempo.

On Sunday, Newcastle will take on Manchester United in the final of the League Cup. The Toon haven’t won a piece of major silverware since 1955, when they won the FA Cup (unless you count the Championship in 2017) – therefore, they’ll be firing on all cylinders to bring the trophy home to Tyne and Wear.

Additionally, Guimaraes will also be back in action when Newcastle take on United for the trophy. Can he make the difference?
