Fabricio Coloccini had a tough task as captain – he needed to guide Newcastle United through an incredibly tough period, including a season in the Championship.
In truth, he didn’t always fulfil his duties – often, when Newcastle needed an experienced pro to get them out of a sticky situation, Coloccini was nowhere to be found. It wasn’t always like this, of course – Coloccini was still a brilliant defender.
Physical, vocal and always aware of his surroundings, Coloccini led by example at the back. During his eight-year stint in Tyneside, he made 248 league appearances for the Magpies.
