Could Newcastle United Sign This All-Star Midfielder On A Free Transfer?

Leicester City’s star midfielder, Youri Tielemans, is set to leave the club in the summer upon the expiration of his current deal. Could Newcastle United swoop in and pick up this gem for no fee whatsoever?

Despite the Foxes’ disastrous underperformance in the Premier League this season, Tielemans has had a modestly impressive campaign – even if he has fallen short of his lofty standards. In 2022/23, Tielemans scored four goals and picked up two assists in 37 appearances.

Tielemans isn’t the only Leicester player to be leaving the club on a free transfer following their relegation to the Championship – Caglar Soyuncu, Daniel Amartey, Nampalys Mendy, Ryan Bertrand, Ayoze Perez and Tete are all also set to be released by the Foxes.

Who will Newcastle United need to beat to Tielemans’ signature?

If Newcastle want to pursue the possibility of bringing Tielemans to the club on a free transfer, they will need to fend of interest from clubs such as Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool [via 3AddedMinutes].

Additionally, Aston Villa are also thought to be interested in signing the player. Interest in the Belgian international is high – as things stand, there are plenty of tempting options for his next club.

Youri Tielemans career summary

Tielemans’ youth career began at Anderlecht – he joined their academy when he was just five years old. He made his senior debut for the club in 2013, in a game against Lokeren, when he was 16 years old.

In 2017, he was snapped up by Monaco for a fee in the region of £22 million. After two impressive seasons with Les Rouge et Blanc, he signed for Leicester in 2019 (initially on a loan deal, the transfer was made permanent in the summer of that year).

He has become somewhat of a mainstay in the Belgian national team – Tielemans has won 58 caps for his country, scoring five goals in total.
