REPORT: Newcastle United Set To Seal Transfer Signing Of Promising EFL Prospect On Deadline Day

Newcastle United are set to seal a deadline day transfer for Shrewsbury Town youngster Travis Hernes, according to TalkSPORT journalist Alex Crook on Twitter.

It is unclear how much money Newcastle will pay to secure the services of Hernes – additionally, it is also not known how long his contract will last for.

Born in Norway, he is eligible to represent both The Lions and England internationally. At youth level, he has chosen to represent Norway’s U17s team.

In his tweet, Crook wrote: “Newcastle United are signing 17-year-old Shrewsbury midfielder Travis Hernes. Played against Leeds in the first round of this season’s EFL Cup and will go into their development squad initially.”

What role will Travis Hernes play at Newcastle United?

According to Crook’s tweet, Hernes will join Newcastle’s developmental squad upon his arrival – presumably, he will slot into their U18s outfit.

At the age of just 17, it’s unlikely that he will have any sort of first-team role to play any time soon. However, the Toon haven’t brought him on board for no reason – they must see potential in him and believe he could feature in the senior team in the future.

Hernes plays in central midfield – while he won’t get into the team over the likes of Sean Longstaff, Joe Willock and Bruno Guimaraes, the future could hold big things for this young man.

Which other players have Newcastle signed in the summer transfer window?

Newcastle have been busy in the 2023 summer transfer window. So far, they have brought Sandro Tonali, Lewis Hall, Yakuba Minteh, Tino Livramento and Harvey Barnes to the club.

Meanwhile, several players have gone the other way, including Allan Saint-Maximin, Chris Wood, Matty Longstaff, Ciaran Clark and Karl Darlow. With Champions League fixtures on the horizon, the Toon have been doing whatever they can to bolster their squad depth ahead of time.

With so many games to play in the 2023/24 season, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see younger player be given a chance in the first team – Hernes could benefit from this, especially if Newcastle suffer an injury crisis at some point in the campaign.
