Newcastle Look Set To Miss Out On £45M Rated Chelsea Midfielder As PL Rival ‘Close In’ On Transfer

Newcastle target Conor Gallagher could be set to join Tottenham, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The Chelsea midfielder was heavily linked with a transfer to the Magpies earlier in the summer, but it appears there is a good chance that the England international will join Spurs before tonight’s transfer deadline.

Although an agreement over a transfer fee has not been reached yet, with Gallagher’s club holding out for around £45m, the Telegraph claims the two teams are set to “close in” on a deal.

The 23-year-old has been on Newcastle’s radar for a while, having been first mentioned as a target last year. The likes of West Ham, Crystal Palace and Everton have also pursued the player.

However, it now looks as though Gallagher could make the switch to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, if negotiations reach a successful conclusion today.

Newcastle have already signed their top midfield target

While Gallagher may have been high on the list of transfer priorities earlier in the transfer window, the addition of Sandro Tonali from AC Milan is likely to have cooled any interest.

The Italian international has had a great start to life on Tyneside and supporters will feel that the club have made the right decision by signing him ahead of Gallagher.

Are any further signings expected ahead of the transfer window closing?

Sven Botman’s ankle injury is not as bad as first feared and there is even a chance he could face Brighton on Saturday evening.

It means the Magpies won’t be forced back into the market to find a centre-back before the window shuts. Manager Eddie Howe will be delighted that the club have managed to bring in four major signings over the course of the summer.

The likes of Tonali, Harvey Barnes, Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall will add much-needed depth to the first-team squad.
