Nathan Carlyon
Defensive midfielder Nathan Carlyon is the most spectacular member of Newcastle’s U21s, but his importance to the team is noted every single time he plays.
A battling defender, he can play in both the holding midfield role and as a centre-back. He is at his best when played at the base of midfield – his exceptional passing is somewhat wasted when he is deployed as a centre-half.
Carlyon joined Newcastle’s academy when he was just nine years old – his passion for the club is clear to see when he’s out on the field.
