Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has revealed that Elliot Anderson is set to be sidelined for a number of weeks with a back problem.

The 20-year-old was not in the matchday squad for the 1-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday night and, asked whether the player had picked up an injury, Howe replied:

“Yeah, it looks like he’s got a back problem so he’s probably going to be missing a few weeks.”

Anderson has been a regular starter for the Magpies this season, having made 12 appearances in total, so he will be missed.

What games will Anderson miss?

Newcastle take on Wolves in the Saturday evening kickoff so the midfielder won’t be available for the trip to Molineux.

Anderson will also be absent for the Carabao Cup fourth-round tie against Manchester United next week, as well as the league fixture at home versus Arsenal at the start of next month.

It is likely that he won’t feature against Dortmund in the next Champions League group game either, while his participation versus Bournemouth is also in question. Anderson could return against Chelsea after the next international break.

How many Newcastle players are currently out injured?

Including Anderson, there are six members of the first-team squad on the treatment table. Both Alexander Isak (groin) and Jacob Murphy (dislocated shoulder) had to be substituted after picking up their injuries against Dortmund, and they could be out for a while too.

Sven Botman is also still on the sidelines with a knee problem, with his return expected after the Arsenal fixture, while Harvey Barnes is out for up to three months due to a foot injury. Lewis Miley has glandular fever and he is not likely to be in contention any time soon.
