Loftus-Cheek Issues Newcastle Verdict As They Hold Milan In CL Group Opener

AC Milan midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek claims the Rossoneri should have beaten Newcastle in their opening Champions League group fixture on Tuesday night.

Taking to Instagram (via Football-Italia.net) after the game, the former Chelsea player said his team did enough to win the game:

“We deserved three points tonight.”

Considering Nick Pope made five saves in just six minutes in the first half, Loftus-Cheek certainly has a case to say that Milan were unlucky, but the Magpies will be glad to come away from the San Siro with a point.

The away team had 6 shots in total, with just 1 on target during the 90 minutes. In contrast, the Rossoneri had 25 attempts on goal, but they failed to break the deadlock.

Howe was “frustrated” with Newcastle’s performance in Milan

Manager Eddie Howe said that he wasn’t happy with his side’s ineffectiveness in the final third of the pitch:

“We had our moments in transitions going the other way. That’s where probably the quality was missing. A little bit frustrated with that, but we will look to improve.”

Considering how poorly they played, though, Howe will be happy that they managed to secure a draw in their first group game.

Who will Newcastle face next in the Champions League?

The Magpies take on Paris Saint-Germain at St James’ Park in a couple of weeks’ time. The Ligue One champions comfortably dispatched Borussia Dortmund in their first group match.

Howe’s men then host Dortmund after the next international break, before the return fixture in Germany. A trip to PSG follows ahead of their final game versus Milan in December.

Newcastle’s focus will, however, switch back to the Premier League this weekend when they play Burnley on Saturday afternoon.
