Shearer Includes 2 Newcastle Stars Alongside Arsenal And Liverpool Players In His PL Team Of The Week

BBC pundit Alan Shearer has selected Newcastle defender Fabian Schar and midfielder Bruno Guimaraes in his official Premier League Team of the Week.

Eddie Howe’s team got back to winning ways with a 3-0 win over Wolves at the weekend, and Shearer was particularly impressed with Guimaraes’ display, saying that he was:

“Instrumental in everything good for Newcastle.”

The Brazilian international did not score or provide an assist on Saturday but he was certainly influential in terms of winning the midfield battle and giving the Magpies a platform to start attacks.

Guimaraes also demonstrated his impressive passing, spraying the ball around St James’ Park to the delight of supporters watching on.

Newcastle will be keen to build on this important victory

While the Magpies did deserve to beat Wolves, the 3-0 scoreline didn’t tell the full story, with the away side having really pressed hard to get back into the game after going 2-0 down.

Securing the three points was the most important thing, though. It hasn’t been a great season for Eddie Howe’s side, with the club sitting 15 points adrift of the top four, but the win at the weekend has moved them back up to 8th in the table.

Who else made it into Shearer’s Team of the Week?

West Ham keeper Alphonse Areola was named in goal, having pulled off a number of saves during the Hammers’ 3-1 win over Everton at Goodison Park.

In defence, Schar is joined by Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and Arsenal right-back Ben White, who scored in the Gunners’ 6-0 victory against Sheffield United on Monday evening.

Shearer has gone with a five-man midfield, with West Ham’s Edson Alvarez partnering Guimaraes at the base, and Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard as the No.10. Manchester City’s Phil Foden and Fulham’s Harry Wilson are the two wide players.

Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins leads the line along with Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez, who came off the bench to score the Reds’ winner in the 99th minute against Nottingham Forest.
