“Magnificent” – Shearer Singles Out £40M Newcastle Debutant For Praise After City Display

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has praised Tino Livramento for the part he played in the Magpies’ 1-0 win over Manchester City in the Carabao Cup.

The fullback made his full debut on Wednesday evening and taking to X (formerly known as Twitter) after the game on Wednesday night, Shearer described the player’s performance as “magnificent”:

Livramento had only made two substitute appearances since his £40m move from Southampton, making a cameo in the league match against City back in August, as well as getting 20 minutes versus Sheffield United in the 8-0 victory last weekend.

Based on his performance at St James’ Park midweek, the defender will be featuring much more prominently between now and the end of the season.

Newcastle had to fight hard to sign Livramento

The Magpies tabled an opening bid worth just £15m for the 20-year-old back in the summer, but they ended up paying nearly 3 times that amount.

Livramento’s club Southampton wanted to get a sizeable fee, as they knew a significant portion of the proceeds would go to his previous team Chelsea. While £40m does seem like a lot of money, displays like the one against City show that it could be a worthwhile investment.

Trippier’s presence could stop him from getting regular game time

Captain Kieran Trippier’s outstanding form at the start of this campaign means Livramento has had to make do with limited minutes on the pitch so far.

With so many fixtures coming up, though, the youngster will definitely get more chances to shine as the season goes on.

Livramento will have to be satisfied with being Trippier’s backup for now, until such a time that his performances begin to surpass those of his much older teammate.
