Newcastle And PL Rivals Have An Even Greater Incentive To Qualify For Europe As UEFA Confirm £3.78bn Jackpot

Prize money in the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League will increase by 18% for the start of the 2024/25 season, UEFA have confirmed.

The governing body claim the prize pot for teams involved in the three competitions will rise to a staggering £3.78bn.

Newcastle, Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal will earn £45m just for reaching the Champions League group stages this campaign.

However, the revamp of the tournament means that there will be 36 teams next year. With increased numbers, there were concerns that each club would get a smaller portion of the prize money. That will not be the case, as clubs will now share equally 27.5% of the total prize pot, which is an increase from previous seasons.

Win bonuses and qualification for the knockout stage will also come with additional rewards, with 37.5% of the prize pot now being shared out between the teams.

What changes are being made to the Champions League format?

At the moment, there are eight groups of four, with teams playing each other home and away. From 2024, it will be one group of 36, with each side playing eight games in a round-robin format.

The top 8 clubs will then qualify for the knockout stage of the tournament, while the teams positioned 9th to 24th will play playoffs for the remaining 8 places.

Newcastle could finish fifth and still qualify

Due to the fact that there are additional places up for grabs in the group stage, UEFA have decided to offer up two positions to countries that perform well in this season’s European competition.

If English clubs in the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League do well enough, fifth place could be sufficient to qualify for next campaign’s European Cup. We will find out which countries get the additional slots later on in the season.
