Key Newcastle Player Set To Miss Chelsea Clash Due To Injury

Newcastle United fullback Kieran Trippier is expected to miss the Magpies’ next two games due to a calf injury, according to The Athletic.

The England international picked up the problem just after half-time during the 3-0 win over Wolves last weekend, and he was forced off the pitch with Tino Livramento coming on as his replacement.

After the match, manager Eddie Howe did express concern about Trippier, stating that the defender would have to undergo further assessment to ascertain the seriousness of the injury:

“He obviously felt something in his calf, he had to come off the pitch, that is a concern for us. I don’t know how serious it is at the moment.”

It is now believed that the defender will be absent for the fixture against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Monday night, as well as the subsequent game versus Manchester City in the FA Cup.

Will Trippier still be selected for international duty?

It appears that the extent of the injury means that the 33-year-old won’t be included in Gareth Southgate’s squad for England’s two friendlies versus Brazil and Belgium at the end of this month.

The international break should, though, prevent Trippier from missing any additional matches for Newcastle, unless there are setbacks in his recovery.

A Newcastle injury update

Trippier is one of 5 players currently on the injury list. Matt Targett is closing in on a return from a hamstring injury that has kept him out of action for several months but it remains to be seen whether he will be included in the squad to face Chelsea.

Callum Wilson (chest), Joelinton (thigh) and Nick Pope (shoulder) have picked up serious injuries and they are not expected to play again this season.
