The Jose Mourinho to Newcastle rumours don’t seem to be going away with Le10 Sport now claiming that the Magpies are keen on appointing the former Chelsea manager.
While the French publication does say that Mourinho has interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia, the Portuguese boss is not interested in the proposals.
When the 60-year-old does go back into management, it is expected to be another job in Europe, with a return to the Premier League the likeliest possibility.
Le10 Sport report that a potential move to Newcastle is “gaining momentum” and current head coach Eddie Howe could be “quickly” sacked if it becomes clear that Mourinho wants the job.
Mourinho does have a strong track record in England
Across his four spells as manager in England, (Chelsea twice, Manchester United and Tottenham), the Portuguese manager won 60% of his games.
Since being appointed head coach of Newcastle, Howe’s win ratio (47.62%) is significantly below that figure.
Why replacing Howe with Mourinho may not be such a good idea for Newcastle
When you look at Howe’s record as Magpies boss, you do have to consider that he was taking over a struggling team. The Englishman has transformed the club during his two years in charge. Money from the club’s owners PIF has certainly helped in that regard, but you cannot dismiss the fact that he has also greatly improved the players who were already at St James’ Park.
In contrast, Mourinho’s aura has slipped away in recent years. His second spell at Chelsea ended with the Blues midtable, while he couldn’t turn around the fortunes of United or Spurs.
His man-management skills, when it comes to young players, is also rather poor. Considering Newcastle are trying to build a youthful first-team squad, he is far from the perfect fit.
