Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has named Newcastle defender Fabian Schar in his Premier League Team of the Week.
Writing in his column for BetVictor, Redknapp said that the Swiss international has remained consistent this campaign despite the challenges that the Magpies have faced:
“Fabian Schar has had another great season for Newcastle and was superb against Fulham at Craven Cottage at the weekend. Obviously, Newcastle have had massive injury issues of late, but this guy has been the one constant in the side and someone that Eddie Howe can always rely on.”
Schar helped his team keep a clean sheet and secure a crucial three points for his team. Newcastle’s victory has moved them within two points of sixth-place Manchester United, who drew at home against Liverpool on Sunday.
Injuries in defence have made things tough for Schar and Newcastle
In stark contrast to last campaign, when he managed to build a strong partnership with Sven Botman, Schar has very rarely had the same centre-back partner this season. That is mainly due to fitness problems.
Botman has been struggling with a knee issue for a number of months, while Jamaal Lascelles has recently suffered an ACL injury. It looks likely that Schar will spend the remaining games playing alongside Dan Burn.
Who else has Redknapp picked in his Team of the Week?
West Ham’s Lukasz Fabianski was selected in goal by Redknapp after the Hammers battled to a 2-1 win away to Wolves. Schar is joined by Arsenal’s William Saliba, Everton captain Seamus Coleman and Brentford’s Sergio Reguilon in a back four.
Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne, West Ham’s James Ward-Prowse, Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes and Luton’s Jordan Clark make up the midfield, while Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins and Arsenal’s Kai Havertz are the front two.
