Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse will reportedly look to leave if the club are relegated this season.
Newcastle, along with West Ham, Tottenham, Manchester United and even Chelsea have been mentioned as potential suitors for the playmaker in recent months.
However, Ward-Prowse could still cost as much as £50m and fans on Twitter are rather sceptical about paying that much for the England international:
No body is paying 50m for JWP

Between 25 and 35 for his age, 50 would be too much imo

I wouldn’t be surprised if he stays maybe at least to get them back up.

Not for 50m no. 20m is fair. I’m not overly convinced about his ability to suit our style in open play.

Half that at least. 50 is a joke.

Bring back Jonjo and save the change lol

If it’s a straight choice of £50m for Ward-Prowse or Maddison then Maddison wins everytime

No not a chance, lavia yes young and bags of potential in a position we need.

Not for £50m. Good player but not sure he has the engine required to play how we do

Southampton are now four points off safety with seven games remaining so there is a good chance that the south coast club will be forced into selling Ward-Prowse this summer.
You have to think, though, that the £50m asking price is a bit steep, especially as the player will be 29 in November.
A lot will depend on the amount of interest that is shown in the midfielder but you would expect that Southampton’s relegation would lead to him being made available for a cut-price. Whether that will entice the Magpies into making an offer, it remains to be seen.
