Napoli winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is “happy” at the Serie A champions and he is not seeking a move away from Italy, according to Il Mattino.
The Italian newspaper claims that while the forward has been made aware of “interest” from Newcastle, he has never wavered on his stance to remain with Napoli.
The Magpies have been heavily linked with Kvaratskhelia in recent months, with it being suggested that Eddie Howe’s side have been willing to offer close to €100m (£86m) for the player.
Arsenal have also been mentioned as potential suitors this week but Il Mattino say the Georgian international is “annoyed” by the rumours, insisting that the forward won’t be leaving the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
Kvaratskhelia’s contract situation does leave some doubt about his future
It has been reported that Napoli have been trying to tie down the 22-year-old to a new contract. Despite signing a five-year deal when he arrived from Dinamo Batumi last year, it was felt that the winger deserved an improved salary following his exploits during his first season in Serie A.
Kvaratskhelia is currently earning a mere €1.5 million a season, which works out at around £25,000 a week. That is not a lot for a player of his calibre.
However, Il Mattino report there is currently “no sign” that a contract extension is close to being finalised, which has prompted more transfer speculation
Financial Fairplay rules will hamper Newcastle
Even after signing Harvey Barnes for the left-wing position, you can’t see the Magpies passing up the chance if Kvaratskhelia becomes available on the market.
However, the cost of the deal may prove a key obstacle. Financial Fairplay restrictions have limited the club’s movement and, while things may become easier in upcoming transfer windows, a bid for Kvaratskhelia this summer is not on the cards.
