Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has dismissed speculation that Callum Wilson could leave the club before the transfer window closes later this week.

There had been suggestions that the Magpies had slapped an £18m price tag on the striker but, speaking at his pre-match conference on Monday afternoon, Howe revealed that he has held talks with Wilson to assure him that his future remains at St James’ Park:

“I’ve had those conversations with Callum. He is 100% committed just like Kieran [Trippier] is. That’s why I’m surprised by the noise around Callum really.”

“He’s currently injured, we’ve got one fit striker and he is our second striker and we are desperate to get him back. From his and our perspective, there is nothing in that (him leaving).”

Why did the rumours about Wilson surface?

Newcastle are very much against it in terms of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability rules so a number of players have been linked with transfers away from the club as they look for ways to balance the books.

Wilson is no spring chicken at 31 years of age and the fact that he is also injury-prone made him a primary candidate for selling.

Rival Premier League clubs were interested in signing the Newcastle striker

Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea have all been mentioned as possible destinations for the England international over the past week or so.

Over the weekend, it was even reported that Chelsea had made an enquiry to sign Wilson on loan, but the offer was knocked back as the Magpies were only interested in a sale.

Based on Howe’s recent proclamations, there is no chance that the forward will be leaving the club before the transfer deadline on Thursday night.
