Newcastle are interested in signing Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong, according to The Independent reporter Miguel Delaney (via GeordieBootBoys.com).

The journalist claims that the 18-year-old is being targeted by the Magpies, Tottenham and a number of European clubs.

Acheampong only signed a new contract back in January so it is somewhat surprising that Eddie Howe’s side have decided to pursue his signature.

It could be the case that they have been given encouragement from the player or his agent, but you would class this transfer as rather unlikely.

Usually, young players angle for a move if their path to the first team has been blocked but that isn’t really the case for the fullback.

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino gave Acheampong his first taste of senior football when he came on as a substitute for the last five minutes of the 2-0 win over Spurs on May 2nd.

Newcastle are keen on signing talented homegrown players

The fact that the Magpies are keeping tabs on Acheampong is not unexpected. He is an England youth international with a lot of promise.

The recruitment department has brought in plenty of youngsters over the past couple of years.  Conincidentally two of those signings have Chelsea connections.

Tina Livramento came through the Blues’ academy, much like Acheampong, before he left for Southampton. Lewis Hall, meanwhile, will make his loan move from Stamford Bridge permanent at the end of the season.

However, Newcastle probably won’t be successful if they make an approach for Acheampong this summer. If he doesn’t make more appearances for Chelsea’s first team in the next 12 to 18 months then a switch to St James’ Park may become a more realistic possibility.
