Newcastle have made Nottingham Forest attacking midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White one of their top targets for the summer transfer window, according to The Mirror.

The Magpies are said to be anticipating the sale of Bruno Guimaraes, with the Brazilian international having a £100m release clause in his contract.

The likes of Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain are said to be weighing up approaches for Guimaraes so a replacement could be needed.

The Mirror report that Gibbs-White has been identified as a potential successor. The fact that he may only cost £50m means Newcastle could stay within the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) by offloading Guimaraes and signing the Forest playmaker for half the price.

It is believed that Arsenal have also been keeping close tabs on the 24-year-old’s progress, with the player having scored 6 goals and provided 7 assists in 37 appearances this season.

West Ham and Tottenham have been suggested as potential suitors for Gibbs-White as well, with Forest under pressure to sell their prized assets. Like Newcastle, they are also said to be in danger of breaking PSR.

Newcastle wouldn’t be getting a like-for-like replacement for Guimaraes

While The Mirror are suggesting Gibbs-White and Guimaraes are similar players, that isn’t really the case. Guimaraes is pretty handy in possession (having provided 8 assists this campaign), but he is very much still a holding midfielder.

Gibbs-White, in contrast, prefers to play as a No.10 or on the wing. It means that, if Eddie Howe’s side do decide to pursue the Nottingham Forest player, they may still have to recruit a more defensively-minded alternative who could do a similar job to Guimaraes. That wouldn’t be a sensible use of resources if they are wary about PSR sanctions.
