Why This 17-Year-Old Could Become A First-Team Player For Newcastle United Next Season

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe is planning to give 17-year-old Lewis Miley a run in the senior team next season, according to a report from the Daily Telegraph.

Miley has been very impressive in preseason for the Toon – so much so that Howe is now convinced that he can do a job in the first team when called upon to do so.

Miley isn’t the only Newcastle youth product who could see his minutes in the first team significantly increased next season. The Telegraph also reports that Howe is a massive fan of Elliot Anderson, who we could also be seeing more of in the 2023/24 Premier League campaign.

How would Lewis Miley fit into Eddie Howe’s system?

Being a natural number ten, Miley is not a perfect fit for Howe’s system. The former Bournemouth manager tends to use a 4-3-3 system, which does not accommodate attacking midfielders.

Due to this, if Miley wants to make a splash in the first team, he will need to adapt his game. Theoretically, he will be able to fill in on the wings and in central midfield – we will have to see if this works when put into motion.

Of course, Howe could always push his midfield forward to allow Miley to play in his natural role – but he is unlikely to make such a major change to his system just to accomodate a youngster.

How much playing time might Lewis Miley receive for Newcastle United next season?

Currently, this is a difficult question to answer. The Mags already have plenty of stellar options in midfield – Miley will be competing with players such as Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, Joelinton, Sean Longstaff, Joe Willock and Elliot Anderson for a shot in the senior ranks.

As such, he may be limited to appearances from the bench. With that being said, Newcastle have a massive fixture list next season after securing qualification to the Champions League at the end of the 2022/23 season.

Baring this in mind, Miley could be given more time in the first team than you may initially think – especially if Newcastle suffer an injury crisis.
